Just a steady drip of “look at me.” And that’s not just lazy—it’s expensive. Every ignored mention or unanswered comment bleeds loyalty, reach, and dollars.

This week’s email is a business story I feel compelled to share. Enough time has passed, the key players have moved on, and the dust has long settled—so it’s finally safe to tell.

Bartering services is a rite of passage for many entrepreneurs, especially in the early days of building a business. For me, though, this wasn’t uncharted territory. I was well into my 12th year as a business owner, with a handful of barter deals under my belt. Some went great, others... not so much. Here’s my advice upfront: if something about your potential barter partner doesn’t sit right—be it a twitchy vibe, over-the-top sales pitch, or just plain weird energy—trust your instincts and proceed with caution.

Now, let’s dive into the tale.

It all started innocently enough. A neighbor mentioned a new self-defense school in town that offered a free trial class for kids. My son and I decided to check it out. He seemed to enjoy it, and I met the owner—let’s call him “Leon” for the sake of this story. Leon and I struck up a conversation about his program, and before I knew it, he was rattling off his résumé. Champion swimmer. Martial arts instructor for special forces. Columnist for a black belt magazine. Inventor of self-defense training products. Former millionaire who lost it all in the stock market but somehow still managed to drive a flashy SUV. At the time, I was impressed. Later, I’d realize this was red flag number one.

After the class, I looked up Leon’s business online. Surprise, surprise—no website. I emailed him the next day with a simple proposal: I’d build him a website in exchange for training lessons for my son. Win-win, right?

“Leon was all in.”

The Website That Spiraled Out of Control

I got to work. But from the start, Leon was frustrating to deal with. He had little content to share, didn’t want to feature his training products (only a mysterious “new one”), and dragged his feet on providing assets. Still, after a few weeks, the site was live. I figured we were good. My son was enjoying the classes, and I was happy to watch him learn.

But Leon kept asking for more. More features, more bells and whistles. And then came the complaints: “Why isn’t my site getting traffic?” I explained that he needed more content—his larger-than-life martial arts stories would be perfect for drawing interest. He scoffed at the idea. Instead, he asked me to build an e-commerce shop. That wasn’t part of the deal. When I told him it would cost extra, he got angry, claiming the site was worthless and he was giving away his “expert training” for free. Red flag number two: disrespecting the value of my work.

The breaking point came on a quiet Sunday morning. I opened my email to find a message from MediaTemple, my hosting provider (at the time). My account—housing over 30 client sites—had been suspended due to a massive DDOS attack. The culprit? Leon’s website.

I scrambled to contain the damage. MediaTemple suggested isolating Leon’s site on a different host, which worked for a few days—until the attacks followed. Four hosting providers and countless hours later, I was at my wit’s end. Nothing stopped the attacks.

Desperate, I reached out to contacts in the WordPress and cybersecurity communities. Sucuri, a leading web security firm, agreed to help. They routed Leon’s site through their Web Application Firewall (WAF). The attack was so massive that it crashed even their robust system. One of their reps told me, “Mike, this isn’t random. This is like a mafia-style hit.”

I confronted Leon, asking him point-blank: “What aren’t you telling me?” He deflected, blaming me for the attacks, calling my work subpar. But I knew there was more to the story.

The Truth Unravels

After another fruitless conversation, I made my decision. I burned an archived copy of his site onto a CD, handed it to him, and told him I was done. That’s when Leon finally cracked. He confessed he’d been romantically involved with one of his adult students—whose husband was now launching these attacks.

I told him two things: “First, come clean to your wife. Second, call the FBI Cybercrime Division. They’re your only shot.” Leon said he’d think about it. I pulled my son out of his classes and walked away.

The FBI Comes Calling

Months later, I got a call from an unknown number. It was the FBI. They wanted everything I had on Leon. I gathered my notes, emails, and files—another half-day gone—and met two agents at a coffee shop. It felt straight out of a Jason Bourne movie. They asked question after question, making it clear they suspected Leon had more skeletons in his closet.

As for Leon? He fled the country. Whatever secrets he was hiding, they were big enough to make him vanish.

The Takeaway

When it comes to bartering, trust your gut. If something feels off, it probably is. I was lucky to walk away with just wasted time. Things could have gone much worse had I gotten deeper into Leon’s chaos.

Hope everyone’s having a great week! This week, I’m framing this email as a real-life case study to show how the StoryPath Protocol can start with something as simple as a social media post, rather than a long-form article. Often, these instances happen organically when a post begins to gain traction and engagement.

It all began like any typical morning: after handling household routines, I grabbed my phone to check feeds, especially LinkedIn. I noticed two connections discussing Rite Aid and an ice cream brand called Thrifty. I was unfamiliar with the history of Thrifty Ice Cream or that it was owned by Rite Aid. Intrigued, I dug deeper and quickly got hooked. I thought, “I need to try this ice cream—where’s the closest Rite Aid?” Thank you, Google Maps! Just in time, too—my local Rite Aid recently closed due to downsizing. Fortunately, Rite Aid seems to be emerging from bankruptcy, and Thrifty Ice Cream isn’t going anywhere.

Founded in Philadelphia in 1962, Rite Aid’s stores in Southern California were once part of Thrifty Drug, a chain with deep L.A. roots dating back to the Great Depression era. During that time, they added a lunch counter, and the iconic Thrifty Ice Cream was born, creating a lasting legacy.

Alright, back to LinkedIn. I started with a post sharing my plan to do a taste test between Thrifty Ice Cream and the popular Ben & Jerry’s. I mentioned that I had gone to my local Rite Aid and brought home a little ice cream showdown. I also tagged Rite Aid’s CMO, Jeanniey Walden. Now, tagging a CMO doesn’t always guarantee a response, but since I’m connected to Jeanniey, I know she runs her social media the way a C-suite executive should—very active, always listening, and authentically engaged. So I felt confident that this post had good odds of gaining traction.

But here’s the key: it’s all about progress over perfection. The more content you produce, the better you’ll get, and your audience will take notice. In fact, they’ll appreciate the raw, unpolished transparency and feel more connected to you as you consistently show up across platforms.

My Top 3 “F Bombs” in the StoryPath Protocol

1. Focus – Before you create any content, always research your focus keyword. The sweet spot? A keyword that’s relevant, has a monthly search volume of 1,000+, and faces low to medium competition. Nail that, and you’re off to a great start.

2. Formatting – A well-structured SEO article of 1,000+ words should grab attention with a compelling title and intro, placing the primary keyword early on. Use H2 subheadings to guide readers, with sections that define the topic, highlight its value, offer actionable steps, and address common challenges. Wrap up with a strong conclusion, including a clear call to action, and sprinkle internal/external links and keywords for maximum search visibility.

3. Frequency – I saved the best for last. We live in a noisy world, and if you think a "one-and-done" content approach will work, you’ll lose out fast. Consistency is key. By regularly sharing your story with a growing audience, you build trust, foster loyalty, and create meaningful engagement.

To me, frequency is like a tried-and-true math formula. Hit your audience with valuable content or well-targeted ads 7 to 13 times (those all-important touchpoints), and your prospects will take action. But, for this to work, factors like ad relevance, targeting precision, offer urgency, and the trust you’ve already built with your brand are crucial. With the right strategy and a warm audience, you might even see conversions with fewer touchpoints!

Syndicate – Once your content is live, it’s time to amplify it. Share it across all your social channels. Don’t hesitate to reach out to news outlets or platforms looking for fresh stories. And don’t forget to enlist friends, family, coworkers, and partners to help spread the word across their networks.

Micro-Content – With your StoryPath live and syndicated, the next few weeks are prime time to break it down into smaller chunks. Share these bite-sized pieces on social media daily to keep the momentum going.

I would then match these properties to clients and started integrated them into our content schedule for quicker amplification. These properties also serve as SEO backlinks which boost the clients website authority and organic search rankings.

While in Atlanta, I was on the phone with John Andrews, one of the founders of Prevailing Path, and we were having one of our typical, high-energy conversations, going back and forth about SEO and content. Our focus was on how effectively Amazon formats its product content. It’s rich in words, highly detailed, and most importantly, easy to consume, covering nearly everything a customer might need during their shopping journey.

After more discussion, we came up with an idea that adapted Amazon’s A+ content approach into a format that search engines love and is also social media-friendly. I believe the term we used was “social press release.”

Following a few more tests and meetings, the social press release concept evolved into a comprehensive story format. It provided enough depth to answer all customer questions, offered background information, and created micro-content bits that could be repurposed for social media posts. This type of content checked all the boxes for a solid content marketing strategy.

This was the first generation of what I later called the StoryPath Protocol.

After writing nearly 300 blog posts across numerous markets, I’ve learned that success hinges on thorough research and careful planning before prompting.

Instead of streamlining your workflow, you’re often left fine-tuning the AI’s output—adjusting words, tweaking phrases, and desperately trying to inject some life into a text that feels inert. Even then, it’s still not quite right. The time you spend editing could have been spent writing the piece from scratch.

Craft Your Unique Voice: Establishing Your Fingerprint

To create AI-written content that resonates as human, you need a distinct style. Not just any style, but one that is unmistakably your own. Think about your favorite authors—each has a unique voice, a way of conveying ideas that’s distinctly theirs. That’s what keeps you engaged.

3. Interactive Brainstorming: Engage in a dialogue with AI, exploring its responses and brainstorming new directions.

Before engaging the AI, take a moment to brainstorm independently. What message do you want to convey? What story can only you tell? What fresh perspective can you offer? Think of AI as a creative assistant, not the lead author.

Structure Your Thoughts: The Necessity of an Outline

An outline is more than just a guide—it’s your roadmap. It delineates your starting point, your destination, and the path you’ll take to get there.

An outline is the difference between a cohesive, compelling article and a disjointed array of words. Without it, your content meanders, losing both focus and your reader’s attention. Readers shouldn’t have to piece together your message—if they do, they’ll simply click away.

Consider this article: Each subsection hones in on a single idea. The AI was prompted with these specific ideas before any generation occurred.

The Final Polish: Your Role in the Process

Too many writers fall into the trap of expecting AI to do all the heavy lifting. They want AI to produce a complete, polished piece with minimal input. But AI isn’t a magic wand. It’s more like a diligent assistant—excellent at managing the groundwork but still in need of your direction to get things just right.

The mistake comes when you view AI as the writer rather than the assistant. You might be tempted to accept the AI’s output as good enough. Newsflash: It’s not.
